BUILD A BACKYARD OASIS IN 5 SIMPLE STEPS

This Memorial Day weekend most folks are either going on a short vacation, visiting a friend or family member's house for an annual cookout or hosting one of their own.  If you are doing the latter, it is now time to spruce up your back yard living space!

I look to my back yard as a place of refuge and relaxation!  This is where I can go to get away, relax, and spend time with the Hubs while my Littles and fur babies play.  It is important that it is just as inviting as the inside of your home!

This year I gave my back yard an instant makeover in 5 Easy Steps...

Toss in Vibrant Patterns and Colors

Before this year, I never had outdoor throw pillows or cushions.  It was just one more thing to worry about when it stormed.  Walking around my favorite place to empty my wallet, Target, I spotted some cushions and pillows I just could not live without.  I purchased them (they were on sale and I used my Cartwheel so I got a steal) and put them out on my old patio set.  Mind you, this patio set has been with us for eight long years!  We purchased it not long after we were married.  I left the tags on for a while to make sure I loved what I saw every time I stepped outside.  Once I was sure we were set!

To keep my new cushions and pillows protected I sprayed them down with Scotchguard Outdoor Water Shield.  This stuff makes the rain just roll right off.  I also sprayed down my entire patio set with this stuff.  The water just beads up on it!  Love it!!!

Be Shady

It is important to have some sort of shade in your back yard oasis!  We used to have a huge gazebo that we absolutely loved (and replaced twice), but after this last snow storm we decided that we would go a cheaper and easier route and get an umbrella.  We wanted one large enough to give us good cover.  Those little umbrellas just don't cut it.  We found this one at Ikea for around $150 base included.  It is 13 feet in diameter!!  That is one HUGE umbrella.  The base is super heavy and holds up to very strong winds.  The umbrella itself has an auto release function that if it starts getting warped by the wind it will fold down.  (We found this out the hard way.)  We love it!

Relax from the Floor Up

For Mother's Day about four years back, the Hubs bought me my first patio rug.  It went under the gazebo and just brought the whole area together.  I loved that Mother's Day gift more than any one I had gotten up until then.  Granted I had only had two prior Mother's Days!  That rug had seen it's better day so we moved it to the garage.  I was longing for something to bring my little outdoor living space together again, so this year for Mother's Day, the Hubs took me to you know where...Target...to pick out another one.  I absolutely love this rug!

Encourage Lounging

This is probably the most important area of my patio.  I wanted a place to sit back and relax and enjoy a glass of wine or a cold one.  We love a fire pit and purchased this one from Lowe's on Black Friday for 60% off!  We have yet to uncover it this season, but I am sure once baseball dies down it will happen.  I first wanted the Hubs to make some pallet Adirondack chairs, but that idea quickly faded when I saw the price on these babies.  I bought these two chairs at Bi-Lo for $15.00 each!!!  I was sure to add a little flare to the chairs with some throw pillows of their own.  I just loved these fun ones with all the Summer words.

Welcome Mother Nature

It is outside after all!  Don't forget to add a little color with some beautiful plants, hanging baskets and a super cute bird feeder!  We have about four of these tiki torches around our patio filled with citronilla to keep some of the bugs away and create a cool ambiance.  I also have a ton of shepard's hooks from my wedding that I use to hang my hanging baskets around the patio.  I decided to correspond the tikis and the shepard's hooks this year to make them look like one.

I love hanging baskets full of million bells (Calibrachoa) and Petunias for my back yard.  It is a full sun area and these flowers love it!  I also like using the coco hanging basket liners.  These allow just the right amount of water for the flowers and I don't have to worry about over watering when it rains.

Last, but not least is the bird feeder.  I am not a bird fan, but the Littles think they are amazing, so we have a feeder.  I decided to get a decorative one this year and as you all know...I LOVE MASON JARS!!  This one looks just like a mason and is a feeder.  Win win if you ask me!

Now we are all ready to have "yard" guests and kick back and relax in our back yard oasis!  Although we won't be using it this Memorial Day weekend, it will see it's fair share of guests this summer.  Does it make you want to come over?

    1. Thanks Kelly! All I need is a mason jar of sweet tea and the perfect sunset...at least I do have that through the tree line, but I'm not as lucky as Mississippi Mrs. to have wide open spaces!

  11. I like your backyard oasis, the first thing I noticed was your patio rug. I never knew these existed! I thought, "a rug outside...in the weather?" so of course I clicked right on over to Target to check it out. What an awesome idea & I love the look. I had pictures of frequently moving furniture since it rains pretty much all summer here in Florida but now...I think I may have to get one of those! :-)

    1. Kellie, I thought the same thing when I had the first one. I never thought it would ever hold up to our crazy weather, but it did for four long years! It pulls everything together and makes it feel like a room of its own. I love it and hope when you have one you do too! Thanks for stopping by!
